How to Join a Recruitment Agency and Start Working as a Teaching Assistant: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you're considering a role as a Teaching Assistant (TA) and are exploring the best route into education, joining a recruitment agency is a great option — especially if you're looking for flexibility, support, and a range of school experiences.

A career change with a difference

At Inspiring Teaching, we make it easy for passionate and reliable individuals to get started in schools quickly and confidently. Whether you're new to the sector or looking for a fresh opportunity, here’s a clear overview of what the process looks like.

Step 1. Register Your Interest

The first step is easy — get in touch! You can fill out our short registration form, where you can express your interest in becoming a Teaching Assistant.

💡 Tip: Even if you don’t have classroom experience, don’t worry. Skills from other sectors (like customer service, care, hospitality, or youth work) are often highly transferable.

Step 2. Initial Call or Consultation

Once we receive your registration, one of our recruitment consultants will reach out to you. This initial conversation helps us:

  • Understand your background and motivations

  • Discuss your career goals and preferences

  • Answer any questions you have about the role or the process

This step is all about getting to know you, so we can match you with the right opportunities.

Step 3. Interview and Vetting Process

Keeping children safe is a top priority for us and the schools that we work with.

Before we can place you in a school, we need to complete some essential compliance checks.

Here’s what we’ll need:

  • face-to-face or virtual interview to assess your suitability for the role

  • current Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check

  • Proof of Right to Work in the UK

  • Two professional or character references

  • Proof of qualifications (if applicable)

If you don’t already have an enhanced DBS certificate, we can guide you through the application process.

Step 4. Training and Induction

If you’re new to education or haven’t worked in a school environment before, we offer training modules covering:

  • Safeguarding training

  • Child protection awareness

  • Classroom behaviour management tips

  • SEN (Special Educational Needs)

  • Anti-radicalisation training

  • FGM (female genital mutilation) training

This helps ensure you’re well-prepared and confident from day one. You will also receive regular refresher training to keep your skills up to date and your confidence high.

Step 5. Start Receiving Job Offers

Once your vetting and training are complete, you’re officially ready to work as a Teaching Assistant!

Your dedicated consultant will begin matching you with suitable roles based on:

  • Your availability and location

  • The year groups or key stages you prefer

  • Your experience and interests

We’ll offer roles such as:

  • Day-to-day supply cover

  • Short-term or long-term assignments

  • SEN support roles

  • Temp-to-perm opportunities

You’ll be able to accept or decline roles as they’re offered — giving you full control over your schedule.

Step 6: Ongoing Support and Development

Our relationship doesn’t end once you’re placed in a school. We’re here to support you throughout your journey, offering:

  • Regular check-ins and feedback

  • Opportunities for CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

  • Help navigating new roles or challenges

  • Guidance if you’re looking to transition into a permanent role or further training (e.g. teacher training)

We’re invested in your success — and we want to help you grow in your career.
